A direct result of our early research findings, the course Considering Culture and Context: Aboriginal Peoples’ Experiences with Pain is now being offered as an inter-professional health education mini-course at Dalhousie Universities Faculty of Health Professions.
The course is taught by professors from four health profession departments, community members and includes an Elder teaching about smudge ceremony. It focuses on inter-professional health education. It explores the multidimensional aspects of pain, and how it is influenced by cultural beliefs and values.
It gives students an understanding of how pain is interpreted and experienced within diverse Aboriginal communities. It challenges them to begin to think about how to incorporate Aboriginal peoples’ perspectives into pain assessment and treatment.
