The first step in understanding the way Indigenous children express their hurt is to establish culturally-safe approaches to pain care. Building trust and collecting valuable insight from Indigenous communities is key. We need to understand how pain is expressed, interpreted, and managed in Indigenous children. We need to find ways for Indigenous children to effectively convey their hurt so it can be reduced.
Our plans include creating a Kids Hurt App to help facilitate improved communication between health care professionals and Indigenous children as well as developing learning modules for pre and post licensure health clinicians.
